First Stop: South Dakota. Days 1-2.

First day out on the adventure, we started out from Cedarburg, WI drove over to Winona, MN to say our last goodbye to some friends and Mugby Junction and grab the last of our things and then drove about five more hours and ended up in a campsite at a state park in South Dakota for the evening. The next day we planned to travel to Orchard, CO, but on our way we ran into a bad storm so we turned around and headed over to the badlands!! On our way we decided to be super tourists and stop at the comical Corn Palace and Wall Drug. Both of these places were quite funny to see!! We camped in the badlands that night and it was so beautiful! We saw bison, prairie dogs and mountain goats!! After spending the evening camping in the Badlands and enjoying the scenery, we were off to Colorado bright and early the next morning!!

a winona whimsy.

Yesterday we had a large amount of snow fall upon Winona. When I woke up to go to work at 5:20 a.m. and stepped outside there were trees touching the sidewalks because the snow was so heavy, I felt like I was in a whimsical dream, kind of like alice in wonderland.

In the afternoon I had a couple spare hours to walk Norah and take some pictures. I was amazed at all the beautiful trees. It’s like the trees were magnetized and the snow clung to them trying to hold something onto them. Pure bliss.

There were times where I would look up or into the bluffs and just see a white abyss. I was absolutely amazed at the beauty that the snow fall had brought. I had seen snow. Hundreds of times. But for some reason this snow was different. It was in the middle of march. So I should have been angry at the snow gods for dropping it on us. But I wasn’t. I was so entranced by the beauty that it calmed me to walk around in it, I wasn’t even bothered by my boots acting as a sponge, soaking my feet. I just walked and walked, photograph after photograph, until I had to snap out of it and return to the reality of academia.

But through my three hour class my mind was still caught in the whimsy of winona.

The man who seeks no recognition.

This story was done for my photojournalism class. I had seen this guy around town many times but had never known who he was or what he did. He was always interesting to me and stood out among others so I asked if I could interview him for a portait assignment, he agreed, and this is what I got.

Matthew Byrnes takes time from his busy schedule Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Acoustic Café in Winona, Minn. Local coffee shops are a place for Byrnes to relax when he’s not volunteering, teaching, or playing music. (Photo by: Amber Grace)

Roots stemming from the suburbs of Minneapolis, Minn., Matthew Byrnes has been living in larger cities for the majority of his life, until a year and a half ago when he moved to Winona, Minn.

Byrnes moved to Winona after falling into a local volunteering gig at the Winona Catholic Worker House. As a live-in volunteer Byrnes helps to cook and clean for the house and welcomes homeless people who choose to stay there. The house provides laundry, food, and beds for up to five homeless people.

Byrnes also volunteers on local farms in the summer in exchange for produce to feed volunteers and guests at the Catholic Worker House. They don’t buy much food at the house most of it is donated.

“One thing I enjoy about living at the house is waiting for food to come to us,” said Byrnes.

Before moving to Winona, Byrnes graduated from Hamline University in Minneapolis, Minn. with a degree in education and religious studies. After college, he taught math at an alternative school in South Minneapolis. He enjoyed it, but it became frustrating when an entire class of students would be absent several days a month.

Byrnes is passionate about religion and is involved in the Quaker religion. He attends meetings in Winona, where their main focuses are activism for women’s and GLBT rights.

Byrnes has played musical instruments since age six. He is a self-taught musician, playing banjo in his solo career as well as in a local band, The May North. Byrnes plays at local bars such as Ed’s No Name Bar and Broken World Records, as well as some small town Wisconsin Bars. He has also played at Boats and Bluegrass and Midwest Music Festival, in Winona.

Byrnes continues teaching in Winona at the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts on St. Mary’s University Campus. There he teaches lessons on piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and ukulele.

Family in Winona

Last weekend my family came to visit!! They are the best people, and I am so glad they got to come visit me!! We had a wonderful time, just hanging out, laughing, eating…a lot, shopping, gazing and the beauty of Winona, and just enjoying life together. On saturday Jason’s band played a show at a local bar, so that was also awesome for my parents, brother, and sister-in-law to be able to see how great they are!! The weekend went by too fast as it always does but I enjoyed every moment of it.

Here are some fun photos!!

It was a lot of fun, a bit harder than I thought to get that baby bump to be prominent in the photo, but also I’m critical of myself. It was so nice to see them, they are beautiful people and I’m so excited for them to have my baby niece/nephew soon!! Soo soon, like any day now soon!! Here are some photos from the day…

It just snowed yesterday and today and the white blanket now covers Winona. When Norah went out to play today I caught a glimpse or her in the beautiful snow!!
